Description:

CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST MAE MALLORY EPHEMERA (5)
MAE MALLORY (1927-2007) Civil Rights and Black Power movement activist who advocated for school desegregation and Black self-defense, targeted by the FBI's COINTELPRO initiative and jailed under false charges of kidnapping for sheltering a white couple during demonstrations by ‘Freedom Riders' activists in Monroe, North Carolina in 1958. She fled to Cleveland, Ohio, but was extradited to Monroe and jailed without bail for one year, before being convicted by an all-white jury in 1964, which sentenced her to 16-20 years in prison. Her conviction was later overturned. Interesting grouping of five pieces of ephemera related to the Monroe case, all circa 1963, includes: printed pamphlet, ‘The Crusader' [Havana: Privately Printed], April, 1963, 8pp. 12mo., produced by Monroe NAACP leader and fellow defendant Robert F. Williams while in exile in Cuba. The pamphlet reprints a broadcast by Williams over ‘Radio Free Dixie', describing the Mallory case, with additional essays describing the attack on the Freedom Riders in Monroe by the Ku Klux Klan and other examples of racism in the state. The front page is illustrated with a cartoon showing Mallory being sent in chains by Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and Ohio governor Jim Rhodes to face ‘justice' in Monroe at the hands of the Klan, racist police, a Confederate soldier, etc. Toned, shows faint folds at top right, else fine. WITH: mimeographed 4to. flier advertising a speech by Mallory at SUNY Buffalo on April 23, 1963, illustrated with her portrait. Shows folds, else very good. WITH: mimeographed 4to. flier produced by the Monroe Defense Committee in Cleveland, Ohio, calling for activists to petition Gov. Rhodes not to extradite Mallory to Monroe. Illustrated on the verso with a cartoon, titled ‘Another Political Football', depicting Rhodes tossing the ‘football' (Mallory) to the receiving team in North Carolina, comprised of the Klan, a Confederate flag, and a ‘Hangin' Tree'. Shows folds, else very good. WITH: Mimeographed letter, 1p. 4to. ca. June, 1963, released by the Monroe Defense Committee and featuring a plea from Mallory outlining the Monroe case and asking readers to sign a petition to Gov. Rhodes to grant Mallory asylum in Ohio. Shows folds, a staple hole at top left and a 1 in. tear to the left edge, else very good. WITH: mimeographed 8vo. flier released by ‘Youth Against War and Fascism', calling for activists to demonstrate against Gov. Rhodes during a visit to the Biltmore Hotel in New York on Oct. 24, 1963. Shows a 2 in. interior tear, else very good. Five pieces.
