Description:

World War I-era German "Pickelhaube" helmet, as worn by the fire commander of the city of Wiesbaden, constructed of lacquered black leather, with a white metal cruciform plate at the crown topped with a truncated cylinder. The front bears a "wappen", or helmet plate, depicting the three fleur-de-lis of the coat of arms of Wiesbaden within a triangle flanked by oak and laurel leaves, and beneath a crenellated banner bearing the title "Stadt Wiesbaden". The helmet is missing its chinstrap and a cockade on the left hand side, but the black, red and white cockade on the right-hand side remains, showing some flaking paint. The interior features a nine-fingered black leather liner fitted with an adjustment lace. Beneath this liner, on the brown leather interior of the helmet, appears a black ink stamp giving the name of the maker, Carl Barth of Frankfurt am Main, and the date 1915. The stitching of the front visor has come undone, leaving the visor attached only by rivets at the corners, and the metal fittings show slight verdigris, else very good.
