Description:

CHRISTOPHER C. ANDREWS
(1829 - 1922) Union brigadier general, captured by Confederates in Tennessee in July 1862. He later commanded a brigade in the operations to capture Little Rock, and helped organize the Unionists in Arkansas and was influential in the reorganization of Arkansas as a free state. Andrews was assigned to the command of the Second Division of the XIII Corps, and participated in the siege and storming of Fort Blakely in Alabama. War-date A.L.S., 4pp. 8vo., Duvalls Bluff, Aug. 10,1864. Andrews corrects the record of the 'Army & Navy Journal', writing in part: '...I beg leave to remark upon a statement...'encountered the enemy under Shelby in a severe battle between Sheridan and St. Charles, and totally defeated him, capturing 20 prisoners, including 18 officers...our loss was about 200'...There is scarcely a word of truth in this. There was a slight skirmish. The whole of our casualties would not exceed twenty. No prisoners were captured...The troops engaged...were from my division...your readers can take little satisfaction if your text is to contain such monstrous errors...' Expertly inlaid, fine.
