A fine association relic, an engraved cigarette box presented by SS-Brigadefuhrer and close Hitler associate CHRISTIAN WEBER to Reichsleiter MAX AMANN. The box, apparently silver or silver-plated, measures 6 x 4.25 x 1.25. A copper band, once affixed to the hinged top but now loose, bears a Reichsadler and oak leaf design with the inscription in relief: 'Das Braune Band Von Deutschland 1939' The front of the wood-lined box is engraved in German (literally): 'In recognition of services to the implementation of D. race around 'The Brown Band of Germany 1939' with a facsimile of Weber's signature. Tarnished a bit, with the loose trim mentioned above, else very good. The shoulder boards were obtained by PFC Joseph H. Rose of HQ Company, 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Div. who served as a translator. In a notecard typed by Rose approx. thirty years ago included with the lot, Rose notes how he obtained the box: '...late at night, on May 4th [1945], I took this Cigarette Box, along with three complete sets of Monogrammed Silver Ware, all of the Silver was destroyed in a fire aboard ship...' Rose also was billeted at the homes of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel and Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler (see other lots in this sale). Sold with a letter of provenance from Rose's niece, a copy of Rose's Enlisted Record and Report of Separation, and a 1989 newspaper article picturing Rose with the cigarette case in a cabinet behind him. CHRISTIAN WEBER (1883-1945) was among the earliest political associates of Adolf Hitler. A city councilman in Munich, he was effectively the boss of the city following the Nazi seizure of power in 1933. An active racehorse owner and trader, he commanded the SS-Main Riding School in Munich Widely hated, Weber died while being transported by U.S. troops following his arrest. MAX AMANN (1891-1957) was the first business manager of the Nazi Party and later became the head of Eher Verlag (Eher Publishing), the official Nazi Party publishing house. He was also the Reichsleiter for the press. It was Amann who gave Hitler the title 'Mein Kampf' for his political manifesto.
