Lot 606
606. CHRISTIAN VII OF DENMARK (1749-1808) King of Denmark and Norway 1766 to 1808. Important L.S., 2pp. 4to., Copenhagen, Nov. 10, 1766, in German, written early in his reign, announcing his marriage to Carolyn Mathilda of Great Britain, sister of George III. Sadly, it would be an unhappy marriage, for Mathilda. Soon after their wedding the king proved himself adept in all manner of excess, including debauchery. He publicly declared the he could not love Carolina Mathilda, because it was "unfashionable to love one's wife". He eventually sank into a mental stupor, and she began affairs. The marriage was finally dissolved in 1772 but Mathilda's lover was executed on order of the King. With paper and wax seal affixed below his signature. Provenance: Collection of Henry Luhrs. Usual creases, else fine condition. $300 - 400
