(CHINESE MISSIONARIES) CHINESE "BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER", JOHN S. BURDON AND S. I. J. SERESCHEWSKY
Very rare Chinese printing, three volume set of "The Book of Common Prayer Translated into Mandarin" by The Reverend JOHN S. BURDON, Church Missionary Society, and the Reverend S. I. J. SCHEREWSKY, American Episcopal Mission, three string-bound volumes printed in Peking, 1872, each 6" x 10 1/2" and contained within a folding slipcase with marbled boards and ivory pin closures. Each volume's cover bears an inscription in Burdon's hand setting forth the contents within. Additionally, the slip case covers have pasted thereto an A.L.S. by Burdon to Mrs. (William Alexander Parsons) Martin, [n.p., n.d.], asking for bean bags to be introduced into his school, also with a card signed by Rev. Sereschewsky. Overall fine. ?, and signed card of Schereschewsky tipped on to dark blue slipcase on the inside flaps. Two ivory clasps fasten slipcase. JOHN S. BURDON (1826 – 1907) was a British Christian missionary to China with the Church Mission Society who in time became a bishop Hong Kong. SAMUAL I. J. SERESCHEWSKY (1831 - 1906) was Anglican Bishop of Shanghai from 1877 to 1884. He founded St. John's University in that city.
