Description:

Historically important D.S. in English, 1p. 4to.,"Executive Headquarters", Beijing, Jan. 18, 1946, an attempted ceasefire document between the Republic of China and the Communist Party shortly after the end of World War II, mediated by the United States, certifying that Yang Tse Wen [romanized] of the National Government, G. G. Humphries of the U.S. Army, and Li Yi Ming [romanized] of the Communist party are"...members of a field executive team entrusted by the National Government in China and by the Chinese Communist Party to implement cease-fire orders jointly issued by President Chiang Kai-Shek of the Republic of China and Chairman Mao Tse-Tung of the Chinese Communist Party. Any decision...jointly reached by this team may be transmitted...to the various commanders of the National Government and Communist forces for compliance..." The conclusion is signed by the commissioners of the three groups: CHENG KAI-MIN signs in Cantonese on behalf of the Republic of China, WALTER S. ROBINSON (1893 - 1970), Assistant Secretary of State for Far Eastern Affairs in the Eisenhower Administration, one of the chief architects of a pro-Nationalist China policy, and a close friend of Chiang Kai-Shek, signs in English on behalf of the United States, and YE JIANYING (1897 - 1986), Chinese communist revolutionary leader, one of the founding Ten Marshals of the People's Liberation Army, and the top military leader in the 1976 coup that overthrew the Gang of Four and ended the Cultural Revolution, signs in Cantonese on behalf of the Communist Party. Eight days before this document was issued, both sides had agreed to an immediate cease-fire and the convocation of a conference through which both sides could jointly rule the country. Yet before any of these agreements could be put into practice, renewed fighting broke out in Manchuria, ending the chance of sustained peace in the region. Very good to fine condition. An important relic from one of the most groundbreaking, yet still unsuccessful, negotiations of the Chinese Civil War!
