CHINA TRADE MERCHANTS
Good group of four letters and two signatures, all executed by merchants and businessmen connected to the China Trade of the nineteenth century, includes: ISAAC MCKIM (1775-1838) China Trade merchant, designer and owner of the first China Clipper. A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Washington, Jan. 13, 1834, to a Mr. Howard. McKim asks his recipient to complete a document affirming that he is the rightful heir to a parcel of land. Foxed, with paper eroded in some areas, else very good; JAMES MATHESON (1796-1878) Scottish merchant, founder of the Hong Kong trading firm Jardine Matheson & Co. A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., [n.p.], Feb. 3, 1845, to Thomas Collins. Matheson writes to Collins, evidently a publisher, granting him permission to use his portrait in a publication, and asking for a number of loose copies of said publication to be combined in a bound volume. Split vertically down the center fold, else very good; YORRICK JONES MURROW (1817-1884) China and Hong Kong merchant and official. A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Hong Kong, Nov 11, 1849, to a U.S. Consul, on the order in which the British Admiralty will hear the case of the brig "Gallant". Docketed on the verso, moderate folds and creases, else very good; GEORGE EHRINGER Trade agent at Canton and later president of the American Fur Company. A.L.S., 1p. 4to., New York, Oct. 1, 1825, to Miss Mark Ogden. Ehringer informs Ogden that the tombstone which she has paid for is to be transported to Canton on the ship Citizen, under the command of Captain Keen, and will be erected by Mr. Clappe. Docketed on the verso, Minor paper loss from the opening of the original wax seal, else very good; JOHN ABEL SMITH (1801-1859)Politician and banker for the opium trader William Jardine. Signature on a postal cover, 3" x 5", laid down on a larger sheet of paper, with another postal cover signed by an M.P. on the verso; and JOSEPH PEABODY (1757-1844) Merchant and shipowner whose ships traded with Calcutta, Sumatra and Canton. Signature cut from a letter, 1" 2 1/4", with a pencil identifying inscription on the verso, else fine. Six pieces.
