CHINA TRADE INSURANCE AGREEMENT
Partially-printed D.S., 1p. 16" x 20 1/2", Philadelphia, May 10, 1815, a contract from the Philadelphia Insurance Company, insuring the ship PACIFIC for $16,500 for a voyage from Philadelphia to Canton and back again. The document is completed and signed by the owner of the ship, Nathan Trotter, and signed at the conclusion by the president of the insurance company, Pennsylvania congressman ROBERT WAIN (1765-1836). The contract insures the ship-owners from many hazards, including: "...Men of War, Fires, Enemies, Pirates, Rovers, Thieves, Jettisons, Letters of Mart, and Counter Mart, Surprisals, Takings at Sea, Arrests, Restraints and Detainments of all Kings, Princes, or People, of what Nation, Condition, or Quality so ever..." The blind-embossed seal of the company is located near the beginning of the document. Endorsed on the back by Trotter and a registrar, with modern pencil notations. The contract is split horizontally in two along a fold line, with the upper right section similarly separated. Fair to good.
