CHINA TRADE FIGURES
Good group of seven signatures, one note and one letter, all executed by nineteenth century British and American traders and customs officials in China, includes: WILLIAM S. WETMORE (1801-1862), American merchant in Canton, trading in tea, silks and spices. A.L.S. "Wm. S. Wetmore", 1p. 4to., Middletown, May 20, 1816, to his grandfather, William Shepard. Wetmore thanks his grandfather for allowing him to board at his house, and relays some family news, including the death of his mother. He expects to see his grandfather again when he visits his father''s import business. Also includes: WILLIAM CARTWRIGHT, Imperial customs inspector, A.N.S., 1p. 12mo., [n.p., n.d.], accepting the invitation of Mrs. Martin for dinner. The signatures, of which six are cut from letters and one is executed on a post card, include: THOMAS SUTHERLAND (1834-1922), founder of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation; EDWARD MCKEAN; F.E. WOODRUFF; COLIN JAMIESON; S.M. RUSSELL (1789-1862) Founder of Russell & Company, the largest American trading house in China in the first half of the 19th century; CHARLES H. OLIVER; and EDWIN LIOT. Some signatures bear mounting remnants on the verso, else very good.
