(CHINA) SHIP CAPTAIN RECEIVES HIS ORDERS
Important and revealing A.Ms. (unsigned), 9pp. 4to., Salem, Ma., Dec. 14, 1855, being the retained copy of orders given to CAPT. EPHRAIM AUGUSTUS EMMERTON (1827-1901). Emmerton, employed by Stone, Silsbee & Pickman which traded to the Philippines, Indies and China, is given his orders. In part: "…You will proceed in the Steamer leaving Boston on the 19th to London where you will call on Messrs. Baring Brothers & Co. to whom we give you a letter. From England you will take the overland route to Singapore where you will call on Messrs. Wm. Macdonald & Co. and deliver our letter. Get any information you can from them and arrange that they shall write you at Manila as to freights, prospect of loading etc. From Singapore take the most direct route to Manila. If by the way of Canton and you are detained there, it would be well to call on Messrs. Augustine Heard & Co. and inform yourself as to the prospect of employing either of your ships in China in case you are unable to operate at Manila....When you reach Manila call on Messrs. Peele Hubbell & Co. and deliver our letter, get all the information you can from them and other sources, examine the exports of Hemp and decide on your plan of operations…" Horizontal folds; some chipping to edges, with very slight loss of a few letters of handwriting; ink faded in some places, but still entirely legible, very good condition overall.

Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee.
