HARRY S. PARKES (1828-85) English diplomat, serving mainly in China and Japan; involved in both Opium Wars. He accompanied Sir Henry Pottinger in his expedition up the Yangtze-kiang to Nanking, taking part in the capture of Chunkiang and the surrender of Nanking (1842). A.L.S. 6pp. 8vo. on board the HMS Coromandel, April 10 (1861) to W. F. Mayers, diplomat and Chinese scholar. Fine content re: Taiping, rebels, Canton, etc. In part: "...We have opened the Ports of Hankow & Kinkiang, and have effected a friendly understanding with the rebels so that the river is free to Trade, but unless something be done to protect Commerce from the interruptions caused by this chronic struggle, the advantages of the Yangtze navigation will be but nominal after all…"
