Description:

CHINA MISSIONARY SOCIETY ADDRESS
Unsigned document in manuscript, 5pp. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], in pencil on ruled paper, the text of an address given before the membership of the Evelyn Houston Missionary Society of Waynesboro, Virginia. The address gives a brief history of the foundation of the Southern Presbyterian mission to China by Elias B. Inslee in 1857 (misdated here as 1867), and the foundation of this particular society in 1873, after its namesake, missionary Evelyn Houston, visited the community. The speaker lists the names of the presidents of the society to that point, relates the expansion of the mission in China to sixteen stations staffed by 128 missionaries, and gives some information about current missionary work that it is supporting in China, Cuba and Korea. The speaker closes by hoping that the Society will: "... direct ourselves to that great task of assisting in winning our own country for Christ, and in evangelizing the whole wide world." Some foxing and age toning, else very good.
