Description:

(CHINA) LAWRENCE KEARNY, AMERICAN NAVAL OFFICER
LAWRENCE KEARNY (1789 - 1868) American naval officer, served aboard the frigates "Constitution", "President", and "Enterprise," active in the suppression of opium smuggling, and secured the rights of American merchants in China. Learning that a commercial treaty was about to be concluded between the English and Chinese governments, he at once communicated with the officials and secured a promise on the part of the Chinese government to extend similar facilities to American merchants. Important A.L.S., 1p. 4to., "Constellation, Macao Roads", April 11 , 1843 to Capt. Howland aboard the Ship Horation wishing him a speedy passage home and asking that he relay the message that the Constellation was to herself sail in a few days for the U.S. by way of Manila. Mounted with a small paper label at bottom which would easily soak-off. Very good. At this time, Kearny was in Hong Kong negotiating his famous trade treaty with the Chinese.
