Description:

(CHINA) JOHN ROBERT MORRISON
(1814 - 1843) British translator, diplomat, and missionary in China. He was the son of Robert Morrison (1782-1834), the noted Scottish evangelist and the first Protestant missionary in China. A.L.S., 4pp. 4to., Canton, Feb 21, 1835, to his sister in London. In part: "…Time flies…every day gives me more experience, and teaches me more impressive lessons. Oh for grace to improve the time, for the days are indeed evil. Indeed, in some sense, all the thoughts of the heart of man are only evil continually…I cast myself wholly, and unreservedly in dependence on my Savior's merits. The Bible, that precious Repository of truth…" Continues with news of the death of a Chinese servant, "poor old Le-Seen Sang," who had died unconverted. The letter concludes with mention of the Singapore Institution, the affairs of the College of Malacca, and a republication of his father's minor works. Some tears and light repairs, else very good.
