(CHINA) FOREIGN MILITARY FIGURES
Good lot of five items signed by foreigners involved in military events in China or surrounding regions. Includes: ROBERT CORNELIUS NAPIER, 1st Baron Napier of Magdala. Field Marshal, commanded a division during the war with China. His achieved his greatest fame came leading a punitive expedition in 1867 to Amba Mariam which rescued several captured British diplomats and roundly defeated the Abyssinian forces. A.N.S., 1p. 12mo., [n.p.], 1881, complies with a request; ARCHIBALD LUCIUS DOUGLAS (1842-1913) Royal Navy officer, commander-in-chief of the North American station. From 1868 he oversaw attacks on Japanese ships of the shogunate, and in 1877 helped crush the rebellion in Satsuma. Third person A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., May 9, 1909, Newnham, Winchfield, Hants headed stationary; JOHN MICHEL (1804-1886) British Field Marshal who commanded a division in the war with China. In October, 1860 the division was ordered to burn the Summer Palace at Peking in reprisal for the torture and murder of British prisoners. Signature as commander of forces in Ireland; JOEL ABBOT (1793-1855) American naval officer who commanded a squadron during Perry''s 1852 visit to Japan. Abbot was later appointed Flag Officer of the East India Squadron. He died in Hong-Kong in 1855. Bold signature on a card; and HENRY DORLING 9MILITARY MILITARY HENRY DORLING (pseudonym "Taffrail"), (1883-1968) British naval officer and writer, served in Africa and China during the Boxer Rebellion (1900), present at the relief of Peking. A.L.S., 1 pg. 8vo., "HMS Telemachus", Dec. 12, 1922, encloses a short sketch for the "Daily Mail". Overall very good.
