Description:

(1802 - 1871) Southern Baptist missionary in 19th-century China. Roberts tutored Hong Xiuquan the Hakka who led the Taiping Rebellion (1851–1864) against the Qing Dynasty which caused millions of deaths. Roberts refused Hong's request for a baptism, perhaps due to a misunderstanding. In 1860, Roberts left Canton and accepted a post as advisor to Hong Rengan, foreign minister at the Taiping court. Important A.Ms. signed "I. J. Roberts" at least twenty times, Robert's personal journal of his correspondence, notes, and expenditures from 1865 to 1870 totaling about 90 octavo pages. One-third of the journal concerns the period prior to his departure from China, and entries in the journal list those with whom he corresponded, his expenditures both personal and mission-related, and notes to himself. Of interest are payments made to his personal servant "Wang Wo", printing of Bible tracts, sums given to charities, and a fair copy in Chinese of the deed for his church in Canton, executed June 15, 1863. Covers heavily damaged with spine cover loose, contents very good.
