Description:

Scarce printed publication, 14pp. 8vo., [Washington, D.C.], Jan. 22, 1845, a dispatch to the U.S. Senate printed for public consumption, titled "Message from the President of the United States, Communicating an Abstract of the Treaty Between the United States of America and the Chinese Empire". This treaty, better known as the Treaty of Wanghia, granted the U.S. "most favored nation" status, legal extraterritoriality for U.S. citizens in China, the right to buy land and erect churches in five port cities, the right of Americans to learn Chinese, and established fixed tariffs on trade. The publication also reprints correspondence between American diplomat and treaty negotiator Caleb Cushing, and then-Secretary of State John C. Calhoun, giving further background on the treaty provisions. Ragged at the left edge where disbound from a larger volume, else very good.
