Description:

(CHINA) 1905 U.S. NAVY "BOAT BOOK" USED IN PREPARATION FOR A VISIT TO THE EMPRESS OF CHINA
A fine relic from the "opening" of China, a 1905 United States Navy "Boat Book" identified to a sailor who manned a launch carrying American officers to visit the Empress of China. The book, published by the Naval Institute in Annapolis, 1905, has 170pp. of text and diagrams which concern themselves solely with the operation of smaller boats and launches, including manning, signals, etc. It is signed at the front: "W. L. Rodgers U.S. Navy U.S.S. Wisconsin Chefoo, China Aug. 18, 1905". The book is also signed several places within by Rodgers, perhaps indicating that he had studied those sections. Back cover detached, else very good. The WISCONSIN was flagship of the Asiatic Squadron from March 1904 to March 1905. Interspersing target practice and maneuvers in the Philippines, she spent the following years on repeated cruises of observation and maneuvers along the coasts of China and Japan. While off Taku Bar, China, Sept. 15, 1905 (a month after Rodgers received this book), the commanding officers of the Squadron paid an official visit to the Empress of China. Of course, they went ashore by means of a launch, in full view of the Empress and critical viewers ashore.
