CHICKAMAUGA BATTLE LETTER WITH PORTION OF LEONIDAS POLK'S CAPTURED BATTLE FLAG
A superb content A.L.S. by Andrew Tousley of the 64th Ohio, 6pp. 8vo., Chattanooga, Tenn., Oct. 2, 1863 reporting on the battle at Chickamauga. He writes, in part; "...the fite [sic] that we had in Georgia or as it is more commonly called Chickamauga & if you see Harker ['s] brigade of Hoods Devistion [sic] in the papers Remember that the 64 Regt. belongs to it & it with the few other brigades saved the armey [sic] of the Cumberland. For the rebs had drove boath [sic] flank & ware [sic] coming at us (for we held the senter [sic]) with 4 times our Number & as we was on the crest of a hill & had two lines of battle & the first line would go to the top of the hill & fier [sic] & the fall back under the cover of the hill & load & the 2 lines would go up & fall back in the same manner. &^ thus we faught [sic] from 11 A. M. till dark & the rebs maid [sic] 3 charges & once they got to the top of the hill but ware [sic] soon driven back so you can judge for your self how it went For my part I never worked harder in my life for the sweat just roaled [sic] all from us But we held them levvel [sic]... We was 13 miles South of Chattanooga at Lee & Gordans Mills Then the file commenced & we faught [sic] them by day & with drew towards, Chat[anooga]. in the Night where we are at this time & strongaley [sic][ fortifide [sic] waiting for the rebs who are on Mishian [sic] Ridge about 3 miles from us & their pickets 1 1/2 mile & our Pickets exchange papers with them & a good many of them Desert dailey [sic]... I will give you Co. G. loss in killed & wounded. Daniel Bitterman of Meogadore was killed Jacob Boon missing, Riley Snider & Thomas Thompson wo[u]nded. Snider in the [w]rist Thomason in the knee... I have a piece of the rebel Gen. Polk['s] batTle flag that we captured in Chattanooga if you receive this letter keepe [sic] the piece in remembrerance [sic] of me & if I fall in Battle meet me in heaven for I trst by God's grace to reatch [sic] that place." Offered together with the aforementioned battle flag piece, a blue swatch measuring 2 3/4" x 4 1/2" as well as the original transmittal envelope. Sadly for Tousley, the remnant would serve just the purpose stated by Toulsey, for he was wounded at Lovejoy Station and died from his wounds in a Union Hospital at Jonesboro, Ga. Letters bears usual folds, else very good condition.
