Description:

CHEYENNE WILL HUNT BUFFALO...AND SETTLERS!
Incredible A.L.S., 3pp. 4to., Nebraska City, Oct. 4, 1878 from cattle rancher and banker N. W. Wilson to the A.A.G., Dept. of the Platte. Wilson, having learned of the military escorting a large band of Northern Cheyennes from modern Sidney to Oklahoma, is petrified of the idea that they will be hunting near the Republican River. He writes, in part: "...civilized interests are too great to permit them such a thing. The only game they will be likely to find there consists of cows & steers of which the savages are no doubt as fond as they are of buffalo with as little hesitation...my partner...together with his family may not have escaped with their lives at the hands of the Cheyennes going up northwards [he refers to renegades under command of Dull Knife]...It is not likely that life or property would receive any consideration at the hands of any of them...prevent...the use of that region as a hunting ground where the game is only human life and cattle...[which] number 50,000 head and is too vast an interest to be interfered with by bands of Indians whether they are on the warpath or in charge of the troops...". Last two pages are mouse-nibbled costing parts of four words and much blank marginal area on the last page, slight blurring of text, otherwise very good.
