Description:

CHESTER W. NIMITZ
(1885-1966) American admiral, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II and largely responsible for the successful ‘island-hopping' campaign against the Japanese. Partly-printed D.S. 1p. 4to., a Citation of Merit on United States Pacific Fleet letterhead [n.d.], commending radio technician James Joseph Mills in the Naval Reserve for: ‘...performance of duty aboard a destroyer in the Solomon Islands area from November 1 to December 26, 1943. During this period, the ship in which he was serving participated in four air attacks by Japanese planes, three surface engagements with enemy naval units, and five bombardments of Japanese bases inflicting severe damage to shore installations. Prior to meeting the enemy in these actions, the ship struck a submerged object, sustaining damage to the starboard propeller causing the ship to vibrate violently. Despite this situation, his skillful and tireless efforts contributed materially to the dependable operations of the special equipment…'. Framed simply. Light toning to edges, otherwise very good. Not examined out of frame.
