Description:

CHESTER W. NIMITZ
(1885 - 1966) American admiral, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II and largely responsible for the successful 'island-hopping' campaign against the Japanese. Fine content partial A.L. (unsigned), 2pp. 4to., San Francisco, Dec. 17, 1964 on his imprinted letterhead to a writer ‘Bill', in part: ‘…As to the material for the piece you plan to write about me. I enclose some odds and ends of information. In October of 1963 I stumbled down two steps in the Federal Office Bldg in SF and fell on the marble floor…No broken bones but the blow on the knee severed the tendon…which hospitalized me for 5 weeks after surgery…While I still walk free, I do so with pain and discomfort, and to stand - as at parties - it kills me!…My life here is uneventful & much mail from young people & some old servicemen who want autographs, pictures & occasional assistance in obtaining what they consider their rights due to their service. We live in the center of a Navy community and find life very pleasant…'. Boldly penned and very good.
