Description:

(1885 - 1966) American admiral, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II and largely responsible for the successful 'island-hopping' campaign against the Japanese. Great association typed L.S. on 'Bureau of Navigation' letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Washington D.C., Feb. 16, 1938, a letter to the Secretary of the Navy requesting authority to purchase printing equipment for the USS YORKTOWN. In part: '...The work that can be accomplished with the Multilith is very limited...It is the consensus...of the Commanding officersthat typesetting machines and printing presses are required to perform essential printing...' Nimitz signs at the conclusion in black ink as the Assistant Chief of the Bureau of Navigation. Filing holes at top of second page, else very good. The USS YORKTOWN (CV-5) was an aircraft carrier commissioned in the U.S. Navy from 1937 until she was sunk by a Japanese submarine at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. Yorktown played an important part in the battle, assisting in the destruction of multiple enemy aircraft carriers, and absorbing the majority of enemy counter-attacks.
