Description:

CHESTER W. NIMITZ
(1885 - 1966) American admiral, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II and largely responsible for the successful "island-hopping" campaign against the Japanese. Superb association, very rare I.S.P. 10" x 8" color, an original U.S. Navy photograph with backstamp showing the Japanese surrender aboard the USS MISSOURI in Tokyo Bay showing Nimitz at left as a Japanese official signs the surrender document as Douglas MacArthur looks on. Boldly inscribed in red ink: "To R Adm Sterling with best wishes CW Nimitz F Adm USN". "Sterling" may refer to Read Admiral William Sterling Parsons, a weaponeer on the Enola Gay who also worked on atomic bomb tests on the Bikini Atolls. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1946. While black and white versions of this photo occasionally come to market, this is the first such color version was have seen. Fine.
