(1829 - 1886) Twenty-first President of the United States who took office following the assassination of James Garfield. Fine association D.S. as President, 1p. 17.75 x 14 in., Washington, Jan. 9, 1885, the appointment of WINFIELD SCOTT SCHLEY to serve as 'Chief of the Bureau of Equipment and Recruiting' in the Navy, holding the rank of Commodore. Co-signed by Secretary of the Navy WILLIAM E. CHANDLER (1835-1917). Arthur places his large, bold signature at bottom. Folds, minor insect damage at vertical fold, light toning, still very good. WINFIELD S. SCHLEY (1839-1911) was a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy and the hero of the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Commanding the armored cruiser U.S.S. Brooklyn during the battle, his quick thinking resulted in the complete destruction of the Spanish fleet, ensured the independence of Cuba from Spanish rule, and bringing the Spanish-American War to a quick close. An important Navy appointment.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee.
