Description:

"CHART OF THE PRINCIPLE PEOPLES OF THE AMERICAS"
Scarce original hand-colored lithograph, 24 1/2" x 19" (sight), entitled "Tableau des principaux Peuples de L''Amerique", printed in "l''an 7 de la Republique Francaise" ("year 7 of the French Republic"), or 1798, by French diplomat, author and illustrator JACQUES GRASSET DE SAINT-SAVEUR (1757-1810). Saint-Sauveur, who at this later point in his career specialized in cataloguing regional costumes and clothing, here depicts native men and women of twenty-four regions of North and South America, the Arctic, and the Caribbean, exhibiting their manner of dress in three rows of intricate and lavishly colored illustrations. The peoples illustrated include the inhabitants of Mexico, Peru, California, Greenland, Chile, Paraguay, Florida, and others, as well as Inuit peoples, inhabitants of the Amazon, and most intriguingly, a group labeled "Inhabitants of the United States of America", who appear to be members of the Iroquois Confederacy. Each group is numbered, with a corresponding key beneath the image. The chart is bordered by depictions of animals native to the Americas, including beavers (at that time a vital French colonial resource), a panther, an armadillo, a monkey, and several tropical birds. The print was released as part of a series which also depicted the inhabitants of Europe, Asia, and Africa, as well as illustrations related to the discoveries of explorers James Cook and the Comte de Laperouse. The lithograph is encapsulated in a gilt frame, which bears the label of August Dobiaschofsky of Bern, now a prominent auction house specializing in historic paintings, prints and illustrations. The lithograph shows light, even toning overall, else very good.
