HUEBNER (1888-1972), American major general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. Summerall writes a warm "Appreciation of Service" letter for Huebner, a hero of the division at Champigny. Summerall opens his letter describing the service of the 1st Division in France, adding: "...You participated in all the battles and sector operations...successively promoted to the grades of Captain, Major, and Lieutenant Colonel...your dominant courage and your masterful leadership stood out brilliantly in the desperate fighting at Soissons, notably at the Missy Ravine and in the advance at Meuse-Argonne...You were wounded in action March 21, 1918...and July 19, 1918 at Soissons..." Summerall lists Huebner's awards, describes the mutual effect that the division and Huebner share for each other, and closes offering the "good wishes and abiding interest" of all of the members of the division.
