(1740-1802) British Major General, commanded a British Brigade in the Southern Operations of the American Revolution, represented Cornwallis at the surrender of Yorktown, presenting the General's sword to George Washington. Good military content A.L.S. 'Chas. O'Hara', 2pp. legal folio, [n.p], Jan. 24, 1769, to John Boddington. In part: '...acquaint the Master general and the principal officers of His Majesty's Ordnance that Mr. Williams...died at James Fort on the river Gambia... Lt Govr Debat informed that he has appointed...John Windsor to take care of the ordnance stores...two extra clerks, which are all the officers that the Board have sent here...all...have died, it being at least fifty to one against any European that he lies in this climate...' At the time of this letter was Commandant at Goree, Senegal, and commander of the African Corps, which was made up of military delinquents who had been pardoned on the condition that they accepted life service in Africa. Fold repairs on the verso, light soiling, else very good.
