Description:

CHARLES MANSON (1934 - 2017) Drifter whose "family" committed the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders in 1969. Psychological evaluation on State of California, Department of Corrections letterhead, 3pp. 4to., July 3, 1986, conducted during Manson's transfer to San Quentin Prison after staff found him to be in possession of a hacksaw blade, in which the signing doctor, M. Lyons, concludes that the incarcerated shows no signs of Paranoid Personality Disorder or psychosis, writing about his clinical interview that "...Manson was alert, friendly, well-oriented...and in good reality contact..." Instead, the doctor describes Manson as a "...a con artist, capable of playing very sophisticated games with people...", adding in part: "...grandiose sense of self-importance...well-developed flair for the dramatic...creative, resourceful and psychologically-minded...significantly above average intelligence, who is sociopathic...sensitively aware of others, perceptive and very sophisticated in his observations. He can be quite friendly...may appear cunning, crafty, extraordinarily manipulative and even seductive...good grasp of human motivation, and within a relatively short time would know much about a person's psychological condition of which they themselves are unaware...More often provocatively oppositional, and at times, indignant, resentful and angry, Mr. Manson appears locked in an Armageddon with society..." The doctor concludes that Manson will have difficulty functioning in San Quentin's mainline population, estimating that his potential for physical violence is below that of the average inmate, recommending his immediate transfer to CMF or CMC-East as a Category "K". A related document by the Departmental Review Board, published in conjunction with this evaluation and included in this lot, states that the Institution Staff and Classification Services both recommend Manson's transfer to CMF as Category "K". Along the bottom margin, however, Manson writes in black ink: "I was told CMF was turned down". Shows original mailing folds, minor spot of damp staining in the center of the evaluation, yet the text is still clearly legible. A fascinating glimpse into the mind of one of the twentieth-century's most notorious men! From the estate of Manson's biographer NUEL (MELTON) EMMONS (1927-2002), who had once been jailed with and later befriended Manson. He co-wrote "Manson in His Own Words".
