Description:

CHARLES MANSON (1934 – 2017) was an American criminal and cult leader. In mid-1967, he formed what became known as the Manson Family, a quasi-commune based in California. Manson's followers committed a series of nine murders at four locations in July and August 1969, most notably the Tate-LaBianca murders on two consecutive days. An incredible find, Manson's personal "New Testament Psalms Proverbs" issued by the Gideons and given to him by fellow Manson Family member SANDRA GOOD. The gold faux leather covered book measures 3 x 3.75 in. with 582 pages. Covers are bent and soiled, apparently from having been carried for some time, perhaps in Manson's pocket, yet contents are unmarked and pristine. The front paste down bears an ironic image of an American flag with a quote from Proverbs: "Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people." From a much older, British book on ancient Egypt, Manson removed printed images and photographs of Ramses II, papyrii, a chair of state, and names of Egyptian kings (Suten Net excised by Manson), and these images were placed at Mathew 24 wherein Jesus mentions the destruction of the temple. The Goddess of Hathor is placed in the back of the book, along with the return address of a woman correspondent. The book was found in an envelope addressed to Manson in prison at Tamal by follower SANDRA GOOD (b. 1944) who pens her name and return address at upper-left. To save postage, she noted: "PRINTED MATER [sic] only 3rd Class" The envelope was postmarked in Burlington, Vermont in 1986, a year after Good had been paroled from prison for making death threats. During the murders, she was in jail for credit card fraud, but was freed and later arrested with fellow Family members. The bible was discovered in a large quantity of personal possessions, mail, recordings, and other items given by Manson to his biographer Nuel Emmons. In July 1961, Manson claimed his religion was Scientology and identified as a Scientologist after studying the religion while incarcerated. Manson completed 150 hours of auditing before declaring Scientology "too crazy".
