Description:

CHARLES LINDBERGH
(1902-1974) American aviator who, in his 'Spirit of St. Louis', was the first to fly solo non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean. Lot of three signed books, the three-volume set of 'A Military History of the Western World' (London: Minerva Press), 1954-56. Various pages, grey boards with silver title on the spines. The books are presented In their original slipcase. Lindbergh signs the top of the first flyleaf on volumes one and two, surname only. The first flyleaf of volume one is signed by him twice. His surname appears at the top, followed by an inscription: 'To Raymond H. Fredette With best wishes from Charles A. Lindbergh'. All three books are in fine condition. Contained in the original packaging box which was addressed in Lindbergh's hand in three separate places, with a post stamp dated May 19, 1973. The box is addressed to Fredette and marked 'Books', indicating the entire set was clearly a gift from Lindbergh to Fredette, a fellow pilot in World War II. Fredette served with the Eighth Air Force in England and flew 31 combat missions over Germany. During the February 3, 1945, to bomb Berlin, he worked as technical sergeant on the Flying Fortress Fancy Nancy of the 7th Bombardment Squadron, 34th Bombardment Group. That mission resulted in Berlin's worst air raid suffering more than 2,000 tons of bombs being dropped on the city. Lindbergh also served his country during the war with 50 combat missions in the Pacific Theater, but only as a civilian consultant, as President Roosevelt refused to restore his Air Corps colonel's commission due to his previously outspoken views on keeping America an isolationist country. Four pieces.
