CHARLES LECLERC
(1772-1802) French general, the husband of Napoleon's sister Pauline Bonaparte. In 1801, he was sent to Saint-Domingue (Haiti), where an expeditionary force under his command captured and deported Toussaint l'Ouverture, as part of an unsuccessful attempt to reassert imperial control over the Saint-Domingue government. Leclerc died of yellow fever during the failed expedition. Manuscript D.S. ‘Leclerc' 1p. folio, [n.p.], Feb. 23, 1799, a record of over 28 years of military service by Citizen Jean-Claude Desmarais, Captain in the 56th Semi-Brigade of the Army of Italy. It concludes that Desmarais may be discharged due to the length of his loyalty and affliction with ‘…chronic rheumatic pains stemming from the fatigues of war…'. He is granted placement in a company of National Guard veterans. Signed at the bottom right by Leclerc as well as the brigade chief and many other members of the council. Moderate wear to edges not affecting text, general wear, overall very good.
