Description:

CHARLES (KARL) L. MATTHIES
(1824-1868) Prussian soldier and revolutionary who served as a Union Army brigadier general commanding Iowa volunteers. Saw action at Island Number 10, Iuka and Corinth, before receiving his promotion and fighting in the Vickburg campaign, and being badly wounded at Missionary Ridge. Very scarce war-date A.L.S. in German, 1p. 4to., Springfield, MO, July 21, 1861, to a Theo Waldschmidt, untranslated by us but apparently with military content, mentioning ‘soldaten', ‘D Companie', etc. Worthy of professional translation and research! Shows original mailing folds, toned at the top edge and slightly ragged at the left, with adhesive residue at the bottom edge and verso, and with a small tear to the top edge repaired on the verso with cello tape, otherwise in very good condition overall.
