Description:

CHARLES II
(1661 - 1700) King of Spain who joined the Grand Alliance in the war against Louis XIV, and having had no children, his death led directly to the War of Spanish Succession. Superb content, important D.S. as King, 2pp. folio., Madrid, 1679, a royal decree abolishing Indian slavery, in Spanish [untranslated]. The Spanish were among the first in the southern portions of the New World, and enslaved a generation of indigenous peoples, consigning them to hard labor in the gold mines. Charles II's decree orders that all Indians that were treated as slaves, as well as their children and descendants, be liberated. A fundamental document in the history of slavery in the Americas. Boldly signed, "Yo El Rey". Remarkably well preserved, with minor toning and foxing, and softening of all edges, very good.
