Description:

CHARLES I OF AUSTRIA
(1887 – 1922) Last reigning monarch of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, last Emperor of Austria, last King of Hungary, last King of Bohemia and the last monarch belonging to the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. Charles I reigned from 1916 until 1918, when he "renounced participation" in state affairs, but did not abdicate. Very rare and important A.Ms. (unsigned) as King, 1p legal folio, [Baden, Feb. 27, 1918], a hastily-written list of naval appointments, in pencil. In full: "I retain the supreme command. I place at my disposition Vice Admiral Keil. I appoint ship of the line Captain [Miklos] Horthy Commander of the Fleet and also Counter-Admiral. I appoint C. A. Holuf Marine Section Chief". A pencil note at bottom reads: "His Majesty wrote the above , Baden, 27. Febr. 1918" Fine condition. Only a few months later, Charles would despair of the defeats being suffered in the war, and would secretly enter into peace negotiations with France. Horthy would serve as Regent of Hungary, causing Charles to twice attempt to regain his throne. Horthy''s later involvement with Hitler is, of course, well known. From the expansive, world-renowned collection of the late Dr. Victor Klingelhofer, with his notes and translation.
