Description:

(1729 - 1794) French admiral in the American Revolution who commanded a fleet of 31 vessels under the ultimate command of George Washington, retrained the British fleet at Newport and led in the land assault on Savannah. Executed during the Terror. Rare war-date A.D.S., 1p. 8vo., [Grenada], July 6, 1779 in French to 'M. le Comte Duval, Governor General of Grenada'. At this time, D'Estaing was undertaking naval assaults in the West Indies, and would soon capture St. Vincent and Grenada. He writes, in full: 'I have the honor to inform you, Sir, that the English have debarked many people that we now see debarking. I am sending the order to the Grenadiers of Dillois and to anyone who has not embarked to submit themselves to your commands. Estaing'. D'Estaing actually drove out the British fleet under Byron, and within two months arrived off Savannah to commence an assault on the city with Gen. Benjamin Lincoln. Very good. According to a 1941 from Hammer Galleries (included), this letter was once part of a collection owned by publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst.
