Description:

CHARLES F. SMITH
(1807 - 1862) Union brigadier general, bravely led his division of raw volunteers with success at the Battle of Fort Donelson, and relieved Grant when the latter was dismissed by Halleck. Died of an infection and chronic dysentery at Savannah, Tennessee. Rare, fine content and association war-date A.L. (unsigned), 2pp. 4to. Savannah, Apr. 18, 1862, to General George McClellan in pencil on a lined sheet, just days before Smith's death. In part: ‘...I am exceedingly obliged to Gen. [Henry] Halleck…for me in permitting me to now make the effort to rejuvenate my…broken-down health in a more congenial climate. I do not know when I shall start, but probably not for several days. I am about to remind you of your promise to aid…my comfort…in travel. Next to the mere fact of change of climate producing beneficial results, I regard the presence and watchfulness of a…Med'l Offr of equal importance in my being able to stand the journey. Allow me to name in this connection my friend Med. Advisor Brigade Surg H. D. Hewitt [?], who is thoroughly [acquainted] with my case in all its bearings, and who, apart from this, has by his strict attention to duty at all times under my discouraging circumstances…earned some little claim & indulgence. The especial reason why I mention him…he is worn down and exhausted from the duties…at the Battle of Pittsburgh [Landing]…See if you can have this accomplished…'. Undoubtedly, this was Smith's last letter as commander: he died a week later after writing this letter from infection and dysentery caused by an injury to his shin during an inspection tour. Minor soiling, else very good.
