CHARLES ELLET, JR.
(1810-1862) Civil War Engineer and an expert in navigating the Mississippi; planned and built the first suspension bridge at Wheeling, Virginia; commissioned as an aide-de-camp with rank of colonel to command a fleet of rams. On June 8, 1862, he led his flotilla after a highly successful fight against the Confederates and virtually destroyed the enemy…only to die of wounds 15 day later, on June 21, 1862. Very rare and fine association pre-war A.L.S. ‘Charles Ellet, Jr.' 1p. 4to., Washington, Dec. 26, 1858, to Confederate general Henry A. Wise, Governor of Virginia at the time. In part: ‘…Permit me, in sending you a complete copy of my Report on the improvement of the Kanawha [not present]…thank you for your complimentary allusions to my efforts…'. Mailing folds, small tear at the top edge, else very good.
