Description:

CHARLES DE GAULLE
(1890 - 1970), General Charles de Gaulle, commander of the Free French forces during World War II, and later president of France. A.L.S. ‘C. de Gaulle', 2pp. 8vo., June 19, 1952, to an unnamed cousin, possibly Xavier de Hauteclocque, in part: …'it is with much heart that my wife and send our congratulations. You are in our prayers and thoughts and ask you to visit us Saturday at eight, on the occasion of Jean Claude [Juhellé] becoming a priest…'. Fine. Jean Claude Juhellé was the son of Jean Juhellé (1889-1926), a French marine who served during World War I and later in the merchant marines. For his service he was awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Distinguished Service Cross United Kingdom. He was killed during routine activities while acting as second captain on the French cargo ship ZENON. Our genealogical research has not determined the immediate relationship between de Gaulle and the Juhellé family, but it is suspected that the two are related via Jean-Claude Juhellé's mother, Madeleine Malcor Juhellé. Accompanying de Gaulle's letter is a comprehensive dossier on Jean Juhellé, including: his marriage certificate, death card, original photos, biography written the brother of Maxim Juhellé, and an obituary from a local paper reading in part: ‘…Since 1922, [Juhellé] had served on cargo ships Sonora, marigot, Californie, Basse-Terre…'. The dossier also includes the original telegram announcing his death and sent to his widow, an article from the ‘Merchant Marine Review' March 1927 mentioning Juhellé, a letter announcing death to his wife from ‘The General Transatlantic Company', an inquest from Wilmington, Dec. 18, 1926 announcing his death from ‘the rupture of the heart, caused by being crushed between a sling-load of bales of cotton and a ventilator abord the French Steamer Zenon, while said steamed was docked at Terminal Island, east San Pedro, while deceased was performing his usual duties on board said ship'. Additionally, this letter includes a dossier regarding Jean-Claude Juhellé's mother, Madeleine Malcor Juhellé, which includes original photographs, the announcement of Jean-Claude's appointment as a priest, Madeleine's death announcement, poems by Jean-Claude on black-bordered letterhead, and, most interestingly a card from the Cailliau family sending thanks for thoughts upon the death of Marie-Agnes de Gaulle, Charles de Gaulle's revolutionary sister! With more intriguing documentation, very worthy of further research.
