CHARLES CORNWALLIS
(1738 - 1805) British major general who drove Washington from New Jersey, defeated Gates at Camden, S.C., and ultimately surrendered to Washington at Yorktown. A.L.S. "Cornwallis", 1p. 4to., Portsmouth, July 28, 1766, to Thomas Thornton advising him that the bearer, one Harvy [?], had served with the 12th Regiment of Foot and had been recommended three years earlier to Lord Granly. Mounting traces on verso, with paper thinned at upper left, else very good.
