Description:

(1877-1961) Broadway star and later Hollywood actor honored on the famous Walk of Fame, winner of an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in his performance of 'The More the Merrier.' T.L.S. on personal letterhead, 3pp. 4to., New York, Feb 27, 1925, addressed to 'My Dear Eight' likely a group of school children as Coburn gives advice on how to make it in show business. In part: '...I am very glad to offer such advice as my own experience has led me to believe worthwhile...First of all, and above all build character. No success whether artistic, financial, or social is of real value without background of character...For the practical side, I would say watch carefully for the opening up of opportunity!... You are fortunate and wise in taking a business education for such training will always be helpful, whether your ultimate goal be art or finance...As I read over what I have written it sounds a bit trite... It is therefore the part of the pupil to heed these admonitions for his own good. With my very best wishes for your individual and collective success in life, hoping you will realize all your dreams.' Included with another T.L.S. on personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., New York, Feb. 14, 1925, to Mr. Green asking for clarification on what he should include in his 'letter to his group of eight.' Both bearing stains in the top left from a paper clip, else fine.
