CHARLES BRADLAUGH
(1833-1891) English reformer who worked closely with Annie Besant. Fine content A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., London, May 25, 1876, to "Gunson, Esq." correcting a manuscript of a contributor to his magazine The National Reformer. In part: "…Can you kindly favor me with any short form of words which added to our 4 principles would make your suggestion effective. Mrs. Besant with whom I have talked over your letter thinks that the insertion of 'in this world' after the word 'happens' in No1 & the addition of the following as clause 2 would meet the case - The others standing as they now are do but numbered 3 4 & 5 'No. 2 That reason & experience are the only wise guides of man, & that Secularism therefore recognizes nothing which nature, or scientific in its method, utilitarian in its morality…". Radical activist Annie Besant was a close associate of Bradlaugh, and the two were tried together in 1877 for having published Charles Knowlton's pamphlet advocating birth control. They were sentenced to heavy fines and six months' imprisonment, but their conviction was ultimately overturned on an appeal technicality. Rusted paper clip impression at top left with a small split thereon, otherwise very good condition.
