Description:

CHARLES A. LINDBERGH
(1902-1974) American aviator who, in his plane, The Spirit of St. Louis, was the first to fly solo non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean. Fine content T.L.S. 1p. 4to., Switzerland, Nov. 29, 1967, to Father Edward Rooney at the Jesuit Missions in New York City regarding the pro-Nazi Dr. Alexis Carrel, with whom Lindbergh worked on the construction of the perfusion pump, used to keep organs alive outside the body. In part: "...I am very glad to have word of Mme. Carrel...I have just finished a letter to her, telling of the introduction I have written...to Father Durkin's latest book on Dr. Carrel...I have tried to make her realize how interest in Dr. Carrel, and appreciation for his contributions both in and out of fields of biology and surgery, is returning...I met a doctor from the United States who was actively engaged in basic medical research. Talk turned to Dr. Carrel. The doctor said: 'Carrel was a hundred years ahead of his time.' Father Durkin's work on Carrel has...been comprehensive and perceptive - extraordinarily well done. I think his publications will have a highly constructive and far-reaching effect - mounting with the passage of time. I have found great pleasure and satisfaction in working with Father Durkin...". Alexis Carrel (1873-1944) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology in 1912; ironically, his later assistance in implementing policies of eugenics in fascist Vichy led accusations of collaborationism and his subsequent imprisonment. He authored, with Lindbergh, The Culture of Organs in the mid-1930s. Father Joseph T. Durkin authored a celebration of Carrel's work titled Hope For Our Time: Alexis Carrel on Man and Society in 1965. Boldly signed and fine.
