Description:

CHARLES A. LINDBERGH WORLD WAR II SIGNED 'SHORT SNORTER'
CHARLES A. LINDBERGH (1902-1974) American aviator who, in his 'Spirit of St. Louis', was the first to fly solo non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean. A pair of sets of joined 'short snorters', or bank notes owned by American fighter pilot John. H. Deierlein who served in the South Pacific as a bomber escort during World War II. One set of 11 notes includes banknotes from the U.S., Australia, Dutch West Indies, Philippines, and Japanese-occupied territories, with one note boldly signed in black ink by Lindbergh, along with many unknown signatures, most likely those of his fellow squadron members. The second set of 11 mostly Chinese bills are almost all signed as well, again likely by friends and squadron members. Such 'short snorters' would be shown off in bars, officer's clubs, etc. where the longest or most impressive would win their owners free drinks. SOLD WITH: three original 2.25 x 3.5 in. b/w photographs showing Lindbergh with Deierlein and other members of the 58th Fighter Group while Lindbergh was in New Guinea on an official mission to teach the fliers how to 'tweak' their aircraft to ultimately extend their ranges up to 700 miles, and with a portrait of Deierlein. Very good. Few people are aware that Lindbergh had been dispatched on such a mission. In fact, Lindbergh flew over 30 fighter missions himself, had strafed enemy targets and actually shot down a Japanese fighter before commanding general George Kenney ordered an end to Lindy's misbehavior. A unique lot.
