Description:

CHARLES A. LINDBERGH (1902-1974) American aviator who, in his 'Spirit of St. Louis', was the first to fly solo non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean. Fantastic, excessively rare photograph signed by Lindbergh upon receiving the French Legion of Honor, the day after landing at Le Bourget on May 21, 1927, also signed by three other principal figures participating in the event. The photograph, 10 x 8 in. and matted to 9 x 7 in., depicts, left to right, Charles Lindbergh displaying his award and signing at lower-left, French President GASTON DOUMERGUE (1863-1937), who bestowed the award and who signs at the far right, American Ambassador MYRON HERRICK (1854-1929), who signs above his left shoulder, and SHELDON WHITEHOUSE, Counsellor of the American Embassy, standing in the background and signing beside his image. A crease traverses the latter's signature, else very good. Double-matted and simply framed in wood. Ex: Stephen Bumball Collection, ca. 1950. This is undoubtedly one of the earliest post-flight items signed by Lindbergh, and certainly among the finest.
