CHARLES A. LINDBERGH AND THE NAZIS
CHARLES LINDBERGH (1902-1974) American aviator who, in his ‘Spirit of St. Louis', was the first to fly solo non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean. He has been accused of harboring pre-war pro-Nazi sympathies. A fine presentation piece, consisting of a period photograph depicting Hermann Goring presenting Lindbergh with a sword; WITH a second photo showing Lindbergh speaking with ERHARD MILCH (1892 - 1972), co-creator with Goring of the Nazi's Luftwaffe, promoted to the rank of field marshal, and later tried at Nuremburg and imprisoned until 1954. Milch has signed across his image; WITH a reproduction of a Star of the German Order of the Eagle. At the bottom right is a gold plaque, reading: ‘On October 19, 1938 at a dinner hosted by United States Ambassador Hugh Wilson, Generalfeldmarschall Hermann Goering presented the Order of the German Eagle with Star to U.S. Colonel Charles Lindbergh. On October 18, 1937, Colonel Lindbergh meet with Luftwaffe General Erhard Milch in Munich. Milch later hand signed the photograph.'. All pieces are displayed within a 12.25 in. wide x 15.5 in. long x 2.5 in. deep box frame. Loosely retained on the reverse is a newspaper tag explaining the photo of Lindbergh and Milch was taken during a reception in Lindbergh's honor at Castle Hohenasohau. Fine.
