Description:

CHAIM RUMKOWSKI DONATES FOOD BASKETS IN THE LODZ GHETTO
CHAIM RUMKOWSKI (1877 – August 28, 1944) Head of the Jewish Council of Elders in the Lodz Ghetto, appointed by the Nazis. He transformed the ghetto into an industrial base manufacturing war supplies for the Wehrmacht in the mistaken belief that productivity was the key to Jewish survival beyond the Holocaust. The Germans liquidated the ghetto in 1944 and all remaining prisoners were sent to death camps. Very rare imprint signed in Rumkowski's name, 1p. 7.5 x 3.75 in., Lodz Ghetto, ca. 1942-43. Rumkowski demonstrates his generosity towards his fellow sufferers, as indicated by this label once affixed to a package of food. It reads, in part: 'Father and mother! I am sending you a greeting on a small envelope...for your child aged 2 to 7 years. (The deadline for publishing the underwritten will be communicated through a special announcement). At the same time, you will also receive for your child 5 Uka sugars from my Magrik-Ausorgeshubb. They are nutty and sweet, so it should be eaten healthily. I wish you a good writing[?]...'. Signed in type at the conclusion. Attached to the notice is a small receipt to be filled-out by the recipient. A bit soiled with a crease, still very good.
