Description:

Important reliquary containing twenty first-class relics of great religious importance, including the Twelve Apostles and a crossed sliver of wood from the "True Cross". The brass oval reliquary is about 5" tall and 3" wide, with tiny relics within bearing printed identification labels. Among those identified are Saints PETER, ANDREW, PHILIP, MARK, JAMES, JOHN, THADDEUS JUDE, MATTHEW, SIMON, BARNABAS, LUKE, THOMAS, and PAUL. Eight other relics at center (a few dislodged) are associated with Jesus' crucifixion and burial, and at the very center of the reliquary, two slivers of wood are crossed, these supposed to be pieces of the original Cross. The reliquary is mounted in a 15" x 23" x 4" shadowbox above an engraving of the Last Supper and beneath a ca. 1890 lithographed glass depicting religious scenes. With letter of provenance and other documents from noted collector Robert L. White indicating that the Vatican seal on the reverse of the reliquary was intact when White framed this piece, and that White had sold the item to autograph dealers Tom and Cordelia Platt, from whose estate this emanates directly. Fine condition, and easily the finest reliquary one could hope to obtain. A reliquary containing only slivers of the Cross sold in Paris a few years ago for in excess of $18,000.
