Description:

Catalog issued by the German veterinary firm 'Aesculap', Tuttlinger, Germany, 1949, 20pp. 8vo., the firm formerly known as Jetter & Scheerer. Illustrations and descriptions on pp 13-14 show a hand-held animal tattooing tool identical to that used at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp complex, the only camps to apply identifying tattoos to their inmates in this manner. At first, the tattoos were applied to the left side of the chest, and later to the left forearm. The initial piercing would be followed by the application of ink rubbed into the bleeding wound. The use of punched tattoos in this manner was eventually found to be inefficient, and was later replaced by a single heated needle apparatus. We sold a boxed example of this tool sourced in the U.S. earlier this year. Catalog was dampstained at one time, a few tears with loose covers, still good condition. The firm still operates under the same name today.
